SIXTH form students at Launceston College have achieved outstanding A Level success again this year with over 30% of applicants achieving places at prestigious Russell Group universities.

Principal Bryan Maywood said: “I am absolutely delighted that the years of hard work have paid off for so many bright young students. Their grades are outstanding and compare with the very best performances of students nationally.

“Launceston College has been blessed to have their endeavour and commitment as an example to all College students and we wish them the very best as they travel to come of the most prestigious universities in the world.”

On results day Peter Crispin, chair of governors, said: “It was a pleasure to be here this morning and see the delighted faces of successful students. I wish to thank the staff for their hard work in supporting the students’ progress.”

Students from Launceston College have been very successful in their attempts to get into their chosen universities and have achieved a total of 30 A* grades overall.

Sarah Pengelly achieved a total of four A* grades in biology, chemistry, mathematics and extended project and is going to study medicine at Cardiff University.

Four students have secured places at Oxford University. Ruchen He achieved three A* grades in physics, mathematics and further mathematics and an A grade in chemistry, and will go on to read physics at Jesus College, Oxford. Ruchen’s achievements are particularly notable as he joined Launceston College Sixth Form three years ago with very little English and has flourished under the Sixth Form’s Aspire programme.

Emma Gillard achieved four A* grades in physics, mathematics, further mathematics and extended project and is going to study physics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.

Emma Platt achieved three A* grades in English literature, French and extended project and an A grade in Spanish and is going to read English and French at St John’s College, Oxford.

Other high attaining students included Max Whale who achieved two A* grades in mathematics and physics and an A grade in further mathematics and Emily Lovell who achieved two A* grades in psychology and extended project and two A grades in history and English language.

Tom Sharman achieved an A* grade in mathematics and three A grades in music, physics and extended project. Rosie Sluggett achieved three A grades in history, photography and Spanish and Angelica Grabowska achieved two distinction* grades in business BTEC and a distinction* in IT. Kate Jenkin, who achieved an A* grade in geography, an A grade in extended project and two B grades in business and English literature, made a dramatic improvement from AS results and said: “Hard work pays off.”

Jenn Burn, head of sixth form, said: “I am proud of all the students and of course recognition is also due to their parents, families and teachers at the college for the help and support that they have given over the last two years.”
