ON THURSDAY, February 5, a diverse group of people from Bude, Stratton and the surrounding area, left Bude on a coach bound for the Plymouth Pavilions.

After an uneventful ride we settled down to watch an energetic vibrant spectacle, namely 'Riverdance.' Our return journey began in the forecast rain which quickly turned to unforecast snow. Callington was rather attractive dressed in white. However just outside Launceston the coach slid to a stop. Whoops!

The brilliant young driver managed to achieve forward motion into Launceston but alas could not negotiate the left hander down St Stephens Hill. We were slewed across the junction watching cars sliding away out of sight. What to do? We alighted to wait in the nearby car park whilst the driver attempted to turn the coach to face towards the A30. Not to be!

We were then informed that two ladies who lived at the junction had arisen from their beds to make us tea. What modern day saints. They provided not only tea but use of very essential facilities.

It became clear that we were going no further. A local hotel was asked if they could help, but were not helpful. Enter the police and ambulance service. They arranged for the Town Hall to be opened and we were all shortly installed. The caretaker and his partner arrived with refreshments provided free of charge from Tesco.

St John Ambulance and police found a surfeit of blankets and so began our stay. A few had a little sleep but most not a wink.

The ambulance service had arranged for two diabetics to receive insulin in the morning. By 6.30am the police informed us that the road was passable and the snow had stopped at last. It was decided that we should set out followed by the St John Ambulance men in their four by four in case we were stopped again and someone needed medical help.

We arrived in Bude at 7.30am ably driven by our young driver, and to the relief of a few dogs and many partners.

Enormous thanks to all who helped us in our unexpected delay. We hope not to repeat it, but if it happens again we hope all who helped will be available again. Thank you.

Bude.
