TRADITION prevailed in Holsworthy on May 1 for the Great Tree measuring. The Great Tree has existed from as long ago as 1624, when it formerly stood at the south-east corner of Stanhope Square. Towards the end of the 19th century, the last town tree, an elm, came down and today the spot is marked with a brass plaque. The present Great Tree was planted 21 years ago and 'Hereditary Guardians of the Great Tree' have nurtured, guarded and cherished it ever since. Trustees meet at the tree and measure it on May 1 every year at 8am. It is now 9.27m tall and 631mm around. For the full report, and a round-up of the area news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
