ARMY Cadet Serjeant Kaya Kirby, 17, has been invested as Holsworthy Town Council’s Mayor’s Cadet for 2022.

Sjt Kirby is a senior cadet at Holsworthy Army Cadet Force (ACF) detachment and is keen to serve her local community through the appointment.

Detachment commander Lt Jim Harvey said: “Kaya’s achievements include Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and an ACF Btec diploma as well as being voted ‘Best NCO’ in 2020 by her peers.

“She remained active ‘virtually’ throughout the lockdown helping to lead online sessions and organising a walking challenge with other senior cadets raising £600 for Holsworthy’s Hospice The Long House.

“She has also undertaken a new programme aimed at encouraging cadets in to nursing roles set up by HRH The Prince of Wales and The Royal College of Nursing.”

Sjt Kirby’s involvement with nursing was of great interest to mayor of Holsworthy Cllr Helen Parker who herself has been a nurse for many years.

Holsworthy ACF parade Mondays 6.30pm to 9.30pm at The Holsworthy Youth Centre and is open to young people from 12 years of age.
