LAUNCESTON Town Hall complex is about to undergo a massive renovation project which will bring light, colour, and life to buildings dating back to the 19th century.
As exclusively reported in the 'Post' last week, the Town Council is seeking the go-ahead for a £1-million loan to foot the bill and be
repaid over 40 years.
The work, which is aimed at turning the Town Hall (built in 1887) and Guilhall (built 1851) into a multi-use centre for the community of Launceston area, will start on February 1 next year and last for about ten months.
Two presentations on the project proposals were made to councillors at their monthly meeting, held in the Guildhall — the first by Mr Phil Wiltshire, the project manager, followed by Penny McMillan, of McMillan Interiors, who gave details of the interior design and materials to be used.
The plans presented showed three main areas.
Mr Wiltshire told councillors tenders would be opened on November 27, followed by analysis of the documents and they should have a price by Christmas.
The Mayor, Cllr Paul O'Brien said: "The proposed re-design of the entrance will be of some significance for the people of the town to come in to one of the most significant buildings in the town."
Cllr Mary Williams described the plans as "absolutely wonderful."
The council accepted the broad outline in the knowledge that the properties committee might raise individual items for further discussion.
The presentations had previously been made to the properties committee.
See this week's 'Post' for more photos and further details of the three main areas of the plan.
