LAUNCESTON Carnival 2011 began with a bang on Saturday, with a maroon sounding the start of the parade. Despite drizzle throughout the day, the weather eased approaching 7pm to allow the best parade Launceston has seen for many a year to wind its way through the streets.

The day started at 2pm in the Town Hall with a children's fancy dress parade which saw a large crowd of spectators and 24 children take part, and was hailed as a great success by the Carnival Committee.

All the entries received something for taking part, and this is something the committee are keen to continue with in future years.

The judges the Mayor and Mayoress of Launceston, Cllr Rob Tremain and Mrs Pat Tremain, and Mr Andrew Parker (main sponsor/Truscotts Launceston Ltd) found it a difficult task to choose the overall winners.

As the clock struck 3pm saw the official crowning of the 2011 Carnival Royalty took place.

Crowned were Kirsty Lea (Carnival Queen); Jazmin Milne (Queen's Attendant); Millie Hollidge (Fairy Queen), and Kelsey Milne (Fairy Queen attendant).
