Over 100 young people from the Callington and Saltash areas will be presented with CATS (Community Action Awarded Through Sport) awards by five local sporting stars.
Gary Stronach, coach of Plymouth Raiders, will present the School Support category; Romain Larrieu, goal keeper from Plymouth Argyle, will present the Community Sports Clubs category; Kevin Moseley, ex-Welsh international rugby player, will present the School Sports Clubs awards; Lisa Picton who is a triathlete will present the Community Groups awards and Bob Brown, who has regularly competed in Iron Man Challenges world-wide, will present the Community Projects category.
The sports stars will be joined by local police officers from the towns of Saltash and Callington. There will also be a CATS Volunteer of the Year Award presented to the volunteer who has, in the opinion of the judging panel, made an outstanding contribution to their local community. The awards ceremony will take place at St Mellion Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, January 14 at 7pm.
The aim of the CATS scheme is to promote, encourage and recognise positive community action by rewarding the young people with sports based awards. There are five levels within the award scheme and these are based on the level of commitment, responsibility and participation time shown by the young volunteers.
The CATS presentation evening will reward young people who have been nominated by both the school and local community for their contribution in volunteering in and after school and community based projects, clubs and local organisations. Nominations have come from the Air Cadets, Callington Colts, St John Ambulance, Callington Youth Centre, K2, local sports clubs and a variety of other local organisations.
Michelle Roberts Director of Community Sport at Callington Community College stated: "The CATS scheme has been very successful and we are delighted with the response we have had from the local community. It is important that we recognise and celebrate the achievements of young people who do give up their own time to support others and make a positive contribution to our community."
The CATS scheme was launched in Callington and Saltash in April 2007 and has been very successful. Callington Community College in partnership with Saltash.net School and Devon and Cornwall Police have worked together to promote the scheme and have also developed targeted projects. These have included 'ON-Side', a very successful street based football project run in Saltash and 'Kick-Off' which has been delivered in Callington. The project aims to provide a high quality activity for young people on Friday nights in Callington and Saltash and promote positive behaviour in the community.
Other projects have included a town tidy as part of force in action day, a beach clean and an art project. Inspector Martin Williams of Devon and Cornwall Police stated: "This has been a very successful programme in both towns and it has been an excellent way of engaging with young people.
"We are looking forward to supporting the development of many more projects during the coming year including the street paddler programme and boxing. It is important that we support the provision of positive activities for young people and CATS is one way in which we can promote positive behaviour in our local communities."
