FRESH from their convincing midweek cup win, Holsworthy moved on to a league fixture at Tavistock.
No longer sporting their (almost) century old stand constructed out of railway sleepers, which has recently been demolished to make way for a new build stand, changing room etc structure, and all credit to them for their long term ground upgrading works which do not come cheap. They also have a half decent team sitting in fifth place, one position behind Ivybridge with whom Holsworthy drew the previous week and who they could well have beaten on another day, writes Alistair Clements.
Patently this was not going to be easy for Holsworthy who despite a recent improvement in form (one loss only in six games) were certainly the underdogs, a win giving three points with a loss for the side immediately below, Liskeard, would have opened up in the relegation battle between the sides to Holsworthy's benefit. Unfortunately it was not to be, going down 3-1 the score though flattering Tavistock a little.
Tavistock initially took the game to Holsworthy who had Lee Morgan quickly booked after his second foul followed by a Tavistock player for kicking the ball away after a decision had gone against him. Tavistock's Mark Conday chipped a shot onto the bar after Lee Rundle slipped then an overhead kick from Magpies' Alan Clarke went close but not close enough.
Mike Landricombe headed just over after a free kick given for a foul on Morgan as Holsworthy applied the pressure, the returning Dan Gill then forcing a corner but nothing resulted to leave scores equal at half time.
After the break Tavistock's Menhennick rose to head home completely unmarked at a corner but the miss of the match followed when Holsworthy's Sam Cameron missed an open goal with his header.
Tavvy were by now getting on top with Glyn Hobbs, a player who last season was reportedly interesting Manchester United, scoring.
Things were looking a little bleak for the Magpies with Tavistock's Mark Conday really causing problems but he blotted his copybook by being given a yellow card for a kick at Mike Landricombe. Conday missed a sitter as Holsworthy failed to get a grip on the midfield but they bounced back on 70 minutes when Levi Landricombe stroked the ball past the 'keeper to pull one back shortly after Giordani debuted.
Right at the death Hobbs added Tavistock's third, which flattered them a little although they were always the better side.
Lee Rundle and his defenders played well but the midfield never dominated Tavistock's and thus little pressure was applied. A disappointing result but an entertaining game, points though need to be collected soon.
On Friday night Launceston drew 1-1 away to Plymouth Parkway with Tom Barwell equalising in the 87th minute after Sam Matthews had given the home side just before half time.
