A WAR memorial believed to be from the 1920s has been granted listed status to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The Tintagel Cross, near the St Materiana churchyard, is one of three memorials in Cornwall to receive the Grade II listed status.

English Heritage is listing up to 500 war memorials a year over the next five years to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Built in the years following the conflict, the memorials are a poignant, physical reminder of the sacrifices and loss brought about by the war.

The Tintagel Cross War Memorial was erected in the churchyard of St Materiana Church and is believed to have been installed during the 1920s.

A stoic Celtic cross standing on a tapered square plinth casts a fitting tribute to the strength of the Tintagel community during the war and the men of the parish who gave their lives 'for King and Country'.
