Last Sunday, Holsworthy was the destination for some 310 disabled people from all over the South West. They came with more than 150 carers from as far away as Weston-super-Mare, Torbay, Bodmin and Newquay to a 'Fun Day' specially organised for them by 15 South West area Lions Clubs.
The event took place on the Manor car park and in the Memorial Hall. There to welcome them and make sure they had a good time were Holsworthy Lions President, John Wyatt, Lions Club members, their wives and partners as well as the Mayor of Holsworthy, Cllr David Smith, the Portreeve, Major Mike Johns and the Town Crier, Roger Dunstan.
The event started in 1992 and was so successful that it has been repeated annually ever since except for the two years when the refurbishment of the Memorial Hall made it impossible. Graham Lang from Looe, the current Lions Governor for the whole of the South West said: "We are here to give these lovely people a fun day out."
This was made possible by a large number of individuals, groups and firms who supplied the food and entertainment free of charge so that everything was completely free to their guests. That meant free rides on Rowland's dodgems, Phil Vanstone's waltzer, free burgers, hot dogs, drinks, ice cream, and popcorns. You could try your hand at the coconut shy, smashing plates, then go into the hall to have your face painted, to relax or dance to the music of the disco or local band 'Rayz'.
Once again the weather was kind and at the end of the day coach loads of happy people returned to their homes.
Holsworthy Lions are already planning a Christmas dinner for senior citizens in the New Year and to raise funds for it, are organising a 'Wine and Wisdom' quiz in the White Hart on Saturday, November 29.
