THE SACRIFICES of many in numerous conflicts, old and new, were remembered on Sunday in services and parades throughout the 'Post' district. Record crowds were reported as the casualties in Afghanistan reminded those who had forgotten to pay tribute to those who gave life or limb to help preserve our freedom — those who gave their tomorrows for our todays.
This year a new format was used for the Service of Remembrance in Launceston.
Instead of the two minute silence being observed followed by the laying of wreaths in the Square, a short service was conducted by Rev David Michaels (the RBL padre) and Rev Tony Cox.
This meant that everyone in the Square was able to participate in the Act of Remembrance, without marching to the church.
Many of the participants have praised this new format, as it enabled everyone to feel included and relevant, making it accessible to those who never dream of going to church. It was felt to be a fitting tribute to all those who have lost their lives in the service of their country.
It is intended to become the way forward, as the Royal British Legion wishes everyone to be able to remember the sacrifices made by our forces in all the conflicts past and present.
Wreaths were laid on behalf of the nation by Dan Rogerson MP, the town by the Mayor and the County by Sasha Gillard-Loft. Representatives of forces organisations as well as all the civilian organisations followed with their tributes.
This year there were also troughs on the Memorial for the placement of crosses to recognise individual tributes.
The President of the Launceston branch would like to thank all those who participated and especially the Mayor for the refreshments in the Town Hall for everyone after the ceremony.
