Launceston's Parade Ground has been officially re-opened after undergoing £120,000 of improvements.

The Parade Ground is located next to St Mary's Church and is one of the town's most treasured public spaces, providing a quiet and reflective spot with views as far as the edges of Dartmoor and down the Tamar valley.

Better drainage has been installed at the site and the Parade Ground has been resurfaced. A retaining wall next to the churchyard has also been replaced and access to the area has been improved.

The flowerbeds have also been replanted by Cornwall Council and the Community Payback scheme, in which offenders make amends for their wrongdoings via community service projects.

Sasha Gillard-Loft, Cornwall Council member for Launceston South division, said: "I'm sure my fellow Cornwall councillors and Launceston town councillors will join me in welcoming these improvements to a key location in our local conservation area. Launceston has benefited from a number of recent developments in the town Square, and this latest work will further enhance our lovely historic town."

Funding for the Parade Ground improvement scheme was provided by the former North Cornwall District Council, and the work was carried out by contractors WH Bond from Trerulefoot. The site will be managed by Launceston Town Council.
