A LAUNCESTON legend has been lost.

Alfie the golden retriever, who was best known for being the resident dog at Launceston’s Post Office along Westgate Street, sadly passed away on Saturday, March 30.

Alfie could be found strolling the streets of Launceston with his companion, James Allen, and also relaxing in the background of the town’s Post Office, of which James is Postmaster and owner.

Behind the scenes, Alfie sadly became quite ill and on the evening of Saturday, March 30, he passed away in James’ arms.

However, Alfie is sure to be remembered by many in town, for his gentle and kind-natured personality, and ability to sense a customer with a treat in their pocket.

Alfie’s full Kennel Club name was ‘Keweras Saint Nicholas’, and came home with James on Christmas Eve, 2011, from Tideford.

James said: “He came to work from an early age and loved seeing the customers, getting regular cuddles and biscuits from several favourites!

“He was a very kind, caring dog who would offer comfort when you needed it and always knew how to make people smile. He was particularly fond of children — they give the most treats!”

Alfie was joined by James’ daughter Eva in 2017 and they soon became ‘best friends’. “He loved long walks in the forest and on the local beaches — particularly Seaton — and had the uncanny ability of hearing the cheese packet, even when appearing to be asleep!” James continued. “He was a big fan of a good nap, but always had an ear out in work for a customer with a treat.

“He was my best friend and companion, he will be sorely missed at home and at work.

“It was amazing to see just how many people cared and will miss him too.”
