A COLLEGE in Launceston has been ranked in the top ten schools in Cornwall.

Recent figures have revealed that Launceston College ranks tenth in an overall list of the best school across the county.

The list, compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), ranks the overall performance of schools at end of key stage 4 in 2025. With 49 schools in total, Launceston College has celebrated the news that is has ranked tenth overall after achieving an Attainment 8 score of 47.9.

The Attainment 8 score is based on how well pupils in a school have performed in up to eight qualifications, which include English, maths, three English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and three other additional approved qualifications.

As well as this, the school has also been ranked third in Cornwall for students achieving Grade 5 or above in English and maths, achieving 54.4 per cent.

Finally, the college ranks fourth in the Ebaac APS. The EBacc APS calculates a pupil's average point scores across the five pillars of the English Baccalaureate, allocating points to a pupil's best grades and dividing by six to create an average point score per pupil. This measure is an average across the subjects and is therefore on a different scale to Attainment 8 which is calculated by simply awarding points across eight qualifications.

A spokesperson for the ONS explained: “This measure is based on the better result of either English language or English literature when both subjects are taken, maths, the best two results from the single sciences (three out of four must be taken), or results from the combined science, the better result from either geography or history and the best result in languages.”

Following the rankings, the school’s principal has been celebrating the news. Mr Matthew Thompson has praised ‘the relentless hard work of students, the unwavering dedication of staff, and the invaluable support of families’, citing it as a driving factor in the schools improvement.

Speaking to the Post, Matthew Thompson said: “We are absolutely delighted to see Launceston College ranked among the top schools in Cornwall for student attainment. To be placed 10th overall, third for students achieving Grade 5 or above in English and Maths, and fourth in the Ebacc is a tremendous achievement.”

Mr Thompson added that their has been a significant rise in results in only two years, with the school shifting from being below the national average, to outdoing it.

He continued: “In just two years, the school has moved from significantly below the national average in GCSE attainment to significantly above it, an extraordinary trajectory.

“This success is a testament to the relentless hard work of students, the unwavering dedication of staff, and the invaluable support of families. Our vision is for every child to leave Launceston College with every opportunity open to them, and these results show that vision becoming a reality. We are proud of the progress made and excited for what lies ahead.”
