LAUNCESTON Civic Society has been working for the benefit of Launceston and its surrounding parishes (the PL15 postal area) ever since it was founded in 1989.
It was started in response to the strong civic pride which the people of Launceston had demonstrated in their historic town and has been a
consistent voice to
express concerns about developments in and around the town.
With the passage of time, there has been a steady reduction in the number of people willing or able to take an active part in the society's
activities, to the point that it now no longer has a
viable Executive Committee.
The society continues to believe that, with active participation, it has a valuable role to play in Launceston and its surrounding area. However, in the absence of a strong Executive Committee, it would be unable to deliver the objectives which it was formed to achieve.
Amongst its many achievements, Launceston Civic Society has;
● Installed blue plaques to Charles Causley and Philip Gidley King;
● Alerted the town, district and county councils to the 'deplorable' state of Zig Zag;
● Campaigned for the preservation of the Priory Ruins;
● Restored and re-instated the Town Clock on Barclays Bank;
● Placed a granite sett to St Cuthbert Mayne in the Square;
● Placed slate markers for the Town Trail.
A spokesman said: "Looking to the future, it is clear that a strong civic society is needed as a
coherent, Launceston-centred voice to deal with the new hastily-formed Cornwall Council."
There will be an EGM of Launceston Civic Society at 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 17, at Eagle House Hotel. It is hoped that as many people as possible will attend and make their views known, enabling the election of an Executive Committee, for which candidates are required.
The spokesman added: "The future of the society is dependent on this meeting being successful."
