THE RNLI plans to turn the Smugglers’ Rest on Church Hill, Port Isaac into a shop with a training room above.

A landmark in the village’s historic streetscape, the Grade II listed building dates to the mid-18th century with some sections likely to date back before then. There is evidence that it was first operated as a shop as long ago as the early part of the 20th century. In the 1930s it was run by Mr Hambly and his sister Mary Elizabeth who was famous for her pickles. More recently it was a holiday let.

The RNLI secured conditional planning permission for its plans in 2018 but at that time did not own the building. Two years later it secured the freehold sale safeguarding its future.

Now it has asked for pre-application advice for its proposed works which will retain as much of the fabric of the building as possible.

The application follows on from one made last September which was withdrawn after objections due to the size of the detached properties not meeting affordable housing requirements in the parish.
