LAUNCESTON is set to receive £37,500 of government money to create a play area at Grammers Park.

Town Clerk Rita Skinner explained that the government money was being awarded as part of the Playbuilder scheme.

Cornwall was one of 43 authorities chosen to receive Playbuilder funding to develop play areas for children aged eight to twelve.

Launceston is one of 28 areas in Cornwall to receive a chunk of the funding. The play areas are to be aimed at children aged eight to twelve and need to be accessible for disabled children and include natural features.

The Town Clerk said Launceston's application for the funding had been supported by letters from St Catherine's School, the police, county councillor Adam Paynter and Dan Rogerson, MP for North Cornwall.

There had in the past been a play area at Grammers Park but having fallen into a state of disrepair was removed. At present Grammers Park is just a grass area, which is maintained by the town council.

There are plans for the Girl Guides headquarters to occupy the top part of the park with the bottom part to include a play area. The Town Clerk also said they were currently discussing the possibility of creating allotments at Grammers Park.
