AFTER numerous conversations with local shop owners and residents of Launceston, it has been highlighted to police that an increasing number of motorists have been using High Street, Church Street and Westgate Street in Launceston as a regular cut throughs.
PCSO Steve Edser said: "All these roads are allowed to be accessed for loading and unloading purposes only. As a result of the increase misuse of these roads, it is preventing the businesses of the town from legitimately accessing their premises. In addition members of the public are being confronted by vehicles that they would not normally expect to see in this area."
On Monday, September 14, members of Launceston Police Neighbourhood Team carried out an education exercise in these roads and advised motorists of the penalty for ignoring the restrictions.
PCSO Edser continued: "Anybody entering these roads and not loading or unloading commit the offence of Contravening a Traffic Regulation Order (it must be pointed out that going to the post office with a letter, going to the bank or picking up a pasty does not constitute loading or unloading). The penalty for contravening this order is a non-endorsable fixed penalty notice of £30."
A total of 29 drivers were stopped and spoken to and an advisory sheet was handed out. From now on anybody caught by police officers driving down these roads and found contravening the order will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.
