BORN IN CLOVELLY: Alice Chidley (nee Moore) aged 86 years recently received a medal for her service in the Land Army. Born in Clovelly, the family then moved to Woolsery where Alice lived until joining the Land Army in the winter of 1940/41. Alice spent her time working in Halwill, Hartland, Hatherleigh and Bradworthy doing various jobs including hedge trimming, planting crops and harvesting. It was while working on the land that she met her future husband Owen. She was lodged at Elmtree House, Holsworthy near Dunsland Cross before moving to her future in-laws at Staddon. Alice finished her time with the Land Army in early 1945, marrying Owen in April 1945 and setting up home in Thornbury.
