MEMBERS past and present of Launceston Amateur Dramatic Society (LADS) gave a surprise party for Joan Blackmore at the Eagle House Hotel, Launceston, to celebrate her 50th year with the drama group. From her early days, Joan has always been involved with Cornish drama when at Falmouth High School. Unfortunately, due to the Second World War she was unable to follow this as a career. Moving to Launceston in 1958, when Ken her husband was appointed Borough Surveyor, she immediately joined LADS taking her first part in the 1959 March production of 'Sailor Beware.' From then, there was no stopping her from being a full and active member. Not only has she appeared in over 50 plays, musicals, and pantomimes she has in addition directed a large number or worked back stage. Joan has been instrumental in establishing LADS youth drama group in the 60's and many of these past members attended the party. Douglas Mounce, actor, and Radio Devon Presenter, an original member of the youth group, welcomed Joan and recalled the many fond memories of working with her. In addition, current members provided a range of entertainment with extracts from plays she had directed or been in and the day concluded with a number of musical numbers followed by film of past productions Joan was involved in. LADS have a number of productions planned and a major Musical production in January, 2010, of 1999 Broadway production of 'Annie Get Your Gun' and auditions for this will take place on Sunday, July 12. in the Town Hall at 2pm.
