BUDE Infants School enjoyed an inspirational morning with author of a series of books highlighting the dangers of plastic pollution, Ellie Jackson.
Bringing her book, ‘Duffy’s Lucky Escape’, all four classes were totally inspired by Duffy and the affects of plastics in the ocean. Teacher, Deb Rosser, said: “A great story to hit home this powerful message — just ditch single use plastic because this true story really shows what happens. The children were mesmerised with the story, as well as the words, illustrations and getting the chance to meet the author — just a magic time.”
After hearing the story, the children drew their own posters with a picture of Duffy and all the horrid things inside her stomach.
One child said: “I felt so sorry for Duffy when she could only float and had a poorly tummy. It was nice to have a happy ending and Duffy could go to her home on the coral reef.”
Another said: “I want to stop plastic in the sea and that is what I wrote on my poster. I know Duffy could have died because of the plastic in her tummy.”
One pupil added: “We must not drop rubbish in the sea as sea creatures will die.”
Pupils will now read Ellie’s other book, ‘Marli’s Tangled Tale’, and follow up work with beach cleans after sitting their SATS.
Deb said: “Thank you for inspiring us Ellie. It is a hard-hitting story and the children have definitely got the plastics message.”
