THE possibility of a new repair café in Bude could soon become a reality.

Deb Rosser from A Greener Bude is calling on local talents and skilled repairers to get in touch to run a new community-based project that is in its early stages. Deb and the team behind A Greener Bude are currently looking at providing a repair café for the town, held monthly on a Saturday, which will enable the public to take in items that are in need of repairing to be fixed, instead of throwing it out to landfill.

This comes as Deb and another group are also looking to see how viable a refill store would be for Bude.

Deb said: “We’re in the early stages of this project, and currently trying to gather people to run the project on our behalf.

“The repair café would be a monthly meeting with a variety of repairers and those with different skills to carry out electrical faults and repairs. It’s to encourage those who, for example, have got a toaster that won’t pop up anymore, to think about if it could be a simple fix that they could take along to the repair café, instead of throwing it out to landfill.”

Although still in the early stages, Deb said the team has a premises in mind for the project, which will be run on a Saturday each month. “It’s also a place where people will be able to meet others and get in contact with local repairers. And if something needs mending, they can’t repair it and it needs a simple part, the repairer can source that part, and the person can come back the following month to have their item fixed.

“It’ll be a place for all walks of life and people of all backgrounds to meet — there will be coffee, tea and cake available, so it will have that social element too.”

The group is also on the lookout for a seamstress in the area who may be able to make simple mends on clothing and fabrics. “So if a zip comes out of your jeans, you could take them to the repair café and have them mended by the seamstress, instead of throwing them out,” Deb continued.
