PLANS to demolish a hotel at Crooklets in Bude to make way for five town houses were not supported by members of Bude-Stratton Town Council planning committee last Thursday.

The prospect of demolishing the current Hotel Penarvor was not what councillors' objected to, their concerns were to do with the design of the proposed replacement buildings.

Councillors felt that any houses erected in the location, just yards from Crooklets Beach, should be designed in keeping with the surroundings.

The committee objected to the proposed development on the grounds that the visual impact of the design was out of keeping with the surrounding area.

At a meeting of the full council that evening, the issue was raised again when a member of the public, Mr Chris Jewell, voiced his concerns with knocking down the building

at all.

Cllr Lea Deely, chair of the planning committee, said: "We do not object on the grounds of knocking down the hotel, instead we are against the design being out of keeping with the area.

"We can't object to taking it down, we can only dig our heels in regarding how the replacement buildings look." — A decision with which Cornwall Councillor David Parsons, who was also present at the full council meeting, agreed.
