THE mayor of Holsworthy joined football teams braving the mid-May heatwave in order to present a trophy to the winners of a revived prestigious local competition.
The Moores Cup was presented to Kilkhampton AFC after winning the final of a knock out competition - with the competition making its return after a 16 year break after being organised by Barry Parrish on behalf of Holsworthy AFC.
Teams from Holsworthy, Kilkhampton, Bradworthy, Bude Reserves, North Petherwin, Halwill, Hartland and Shebbear took place in the competition, with the variability weather in the rounds leading up to the blazing hot final proving a challenge for participants.
Cllr Jon Hutchings, the mayor of Holsworthy presented the trophy to Kilkhampton AFC after a 3-0 victory against Bradworthy.
The mayor said: “I was invited out to The Holsworthy Football Club to welcome the teams and present the trophy for the final of The Moores Cup.
The trophy was originally presented to the club by the brother of a local farmer who was heavily involved in the club. The competition was restarted this year after a 16 year break and organised by Barry Parrish on behalf of the Holsworthy AFC.
“Teams from Holsworthy, Kilkhampton, Bradworthy, Bude res, N Petherwin, Halwill, Hartland and Shebbear took part this year. From some very cold semi finals at Upcott (the home of Holsworthy AFC), to the final on one of the hottest days on record.
“It has been great to watch the local teams battle it out to reach todays final. Bradworthy United AFC took on Kilkhampton AFC in the final with Kilkhampton winning 3-0. After the final whistle I donned my robes, not my best idea in the heat, and presented the team medals and the trophy to Kilk's Captain.
“Another enjoyable day at Holsworthy Football club, well done to all the clubs and players involved.”
