TORRIDGE District Council and Active Torridge have announced that the current improvement and decarbonisation works at Holsworthy Leisure Centre have now been completed.
Funded by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and the Rural Prosperity Fund, building fabric upgrades to the swimming pool, roof, windows, and doors have substantially improved the thermal efficiency of the premises.
In addition, a new solar PV system to the new swimming pool roof funded by the Sport England Swimming Pool Support Fund has been maximised to generate as much solar energy as possible. Over the summer months the new system is expected to generate enough electricity to match the electrical operating costs for the facility. This should significantly reduce the electrical running costs during this period when the ventilation and cooling demands for the gym space are greatest.
Due to the success of the recent works and the projected long-term benefits, at a recent Full Council meeting, councillors voted not to go ahead with further works to the centre which would have involved further alterations to the existing heating plant and decarbonisation works.
Councillor Lyndon Piper, lead member for leisure at Torridge District Council, said: "The works have been critical in helping us to improve the sustainability of the pool, by helping to reduce both our operating costs and carbon emissions. The leisure centre is a key community resource for both young and old and these new upgrades will enable us to provide a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective place for future generations to enjoy."
Chris Keeble, chief operating officer at Active Torridge said: "Swimming pools and leisure centres are essential community assets that play a crucial role in promoting physical activity and well-being. The enhancements being made to Holsworthy Leisure Centre will not only improve energy efficiency and promote environmental sustainability but also ensure the facility remains financially viable.”
