THE Holsworthy Amateur Theatrical Society’s next production sees Ken Tyrrell back in the director’s chair with Funny Money, a crazy, hilarious farce by the master writer Ray Cooney.
When this play is performed in September, it will be two years since Ken’s last production, Cooney’s ‘Run For Your Wife’, when audiences left the theatre making comments like ‘haven’t laughed so much in years’ and ‘couldn’t believe this was done by amateurs’.
So everyone who saw that play will certainly be looking forward to this one, which is equally funny.
Imagine picking up the wrong briefcase and later finding it contains £735,000 in used fifty pound notes.
This is Henry Perkins’ dilemma, ‘shall I give it back, keep it or run away with it?’
Henry’s decision starts two hours of comedic shenanigans that will have the audiences rolling in the aisles.
Henry is brilliantly played by Dave King and Jean, his long-suffering wife, by Diana Sluggett. Their friends, Vic (Martin Jordan) and Betty (Stephanie Devoy) are expecting a celebratory dinner but are unwittingly dragged into Henry’s scheming.
Add to this one bent policeman (Alan Eyles), another cop who does everything by the book (Colin Burton) and a taxi driver (Peter Whitehead) who gets enmeshed when his fare is nothing like what he expects.
The mix brings about a fast pace of theatrical madness, which is compounded by the arrival of ‘Mr Big’ (Roger Chappple), who wants his money back and doesn’t care how he gets it!
The play will be performed from Thursday to Saturday, September 15 to 17, and 22 to 24, at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm.
Tickets will be on sale from Tuesday, August 30, at HATS Theatre, Bodmin Street, Holsworthy, between 10am and 3pm priced at £8 (concessions £6) or telephone 01409 253826.
