THE pupils from St Petroc’s School in Bude were hugely lucky to have a special concert put on for them by the Heartwood Trio from London recently.

Children as young as three from St Petroc’s Early Years joined older pupils as they sat enraptured, listening to the wonderful music from an oboe, a clarinet and a bassoon.

The visit was made possible by Sound Waves South West, an independent Bude-based charity, who provide music therapy, as well as running workshops to allow children the chance to hear music of cultural diversity.

Live Music Now, the charity set up by legendary musician, Yehudi Menuhin, also helped to ensure the trio could perform to the school.

The three musicians who are currently touring around Cornwall showed the children their respective instruments and then played some beautiful pieces to them. Two pupils were also lucky enough to do some conducting!

The headmaster, Dan Thornburn, said: “Music is such a wonderfully binding thing and we were all completely transfixed to hear such talented musicians performing live to us. I was most touched that some of our very youngest pupils sat through the whole concert without a peep, which shows just how much they were enjoying it. We value music highly here at St Petroc’s and I’ve no doubt that today’s concert will have inspired many who heard it to practise even harder than they already do!”

Music is a major strength of St Petroc’s School, with all pupils from Reception upwards receiving music lessons from a specialist teacher each week. Well over 50% of the pupils have individual music tuition too, and the school’s choir has a strong reputation locally. There are sure to be some budding new oboists, bassoonists and clarinettists at the school after the marvellous concert.
