THOSE who are behind a recent spate of arson and vandalism in Launceston’s parks are advised to hand themselves in to police.

The message comes after two children, who were said to have set fire to the nest swing in Lanstephan Play Park, were caught and are being dealt with by police and Launceston Town Council.

Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for Launceston South, Jade Farrington, said she and Liberal Democrat ward member for Launceston Central, Gemma Massey, recently met with the town’s neighbourhood beat manager, PC Steve Stoppard, to discuss recent vandalism.

The Post reported last month that equipment had to be cordoned off at Priory Park play area after a climbing rope and its re-enforced wire were cut through.

Cllr Farrington said of her recent meeting with PC Stoppard: “He told us that those responsible for the latest incident have now been caught, and he had a clear message for those who had set fire to and vandalised other area: Anyone who hands themselves in can be dealt with through restorative justice, but anyone who doesn’t come forward and is instead caught by police could face much tougher action.

“He said that the police are continuing to investigate leads and they are determined to catch them. If it was one of your friends, neighbours or children then please urge them to contact the police, or do so anonymously yourself.”
