MORE than 100 senior citizens were guests of Holsworthy Rotary Club at their annual strawberry tea in the Memorial Hall on the afternoon of Saturday, June 11, writes Christine Williams.
Over the years, the Holsworthy Rotarians’ ‘extravaganza’ at the HATS theatre has raised in excess of £30,000 for local charities making it possible for their president, Cedric Cook to present cheques to the following organisations; the Devon Air Ambulance, Holsworthy District Guides and Scouts, Holsworthy Amateur Theatrical Society to improve their stage, Carewise which supports local young carers, Devon Freewheelers, a motorcycle courier service which delivers essential blood plasma and human organs to hospitals throughout the county, Bradworthy Primary Academy choir and music department and Newton St Petrock Male Voice Choir.
Three young hockey players, Emily and Louise Shepherd and Amy Gear, also benefitted.
After a few words of welcome from the president the serious business of tucking into cakes sandwiches, scones and strawberries and cream began while Rotarians made sure cups were well filled and David Robinson entertained on the keyboard.
An enjoyable afternoon ended with the drawing of a raffle and thanks to the Rotary Club for their hospitality.
