CAMELFORD Town Council could soon be looking into ways of introducing a new electric car club in the town.
At a recent meeting of the town council, councillors were presented with an idea by Jim Hunt, who introduced an idea of having two electric vehicles in Camelford in the future.
After standing orders were announced, Mr Hunt addressed the council by saying: “This is a concept which, in conjunction with complicated research and in conjunction with the government, might be in Camelford’s interest for the provision of two electric vehicles in the future.”
As chair of the Camelford Clean Air Group, which has been looking at ways of improving traffic measures and air quality, after Camelford was declared an air quality management area at the beginning of the year, Cllr Claire Hewlett said: “Where do we as a council fit in? I know charging points was your worry (Mr Hunt), as there isn’t enough — whether this is something we want to look at investigating.”
A suggestion was made for the car club to be community-led. Mr Hunt continued: “If you look at Co Cars, which is based in Exeter, it’s a non-profit organisation and is very flexible. If we can get the government to pay for our research, we will be able to start from there.
“I live on the edge of Tremail, if one car could be kept there, it would be a good starting point. If anyone in Camelford wants to use it, they can.”
Mayor, Cllr Rob Rotchell, was keen to see what local interest would be provided on this idea. He said: “We could certainly host an event, to see what the interest is in this, and perhaps if Claire and your clean air group, could help host, that would be good.”
Coming to a conclusion, he added: “In the first instance, Claire will take this to the clean air group, you have a debate, see if they’re interested in hosting the event and taking it on. If not, we can see if we can create a community event for this. So, hopefully, Claire will lead with the air quality group and feedback to us.”
Cllr Hewlett agreed to this.
