MAY Day saw the Great Tree measuring take place yet again at Holsworthy.
Trustees meet at the tree and measure in on this date every year (below).
The Great Tree has existed from as long ago as 1624, when it formerly stood at the south-east corner of Stanhope Square.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the last town tree, an elm, came down and today the spot is marked with a brass plaque.
The present Great Tree was planted 23 years ago and ‘Hereditary Guardians of the Great Tree’ have nurtured, guarded and cherished it ever since.
The tree, which was measured at 8am on Sunday, is now 660mm girth. Last year the tree was 640mm.
