THIS year’s Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Show started off looking like a grey and rainy day but that did not dampen the exhibitors’ spirits as they came together to present a glorious show.

As the sun began to push its way through the clouds, the crowds flocked to the main ring to enjoy a wealth of displays including the puissance, the parade of the hounds, the Parelli Natural Horsemanship demonstration and much, much more.

There was also a phenomenal turnout of entrants to this year’s other events such as the family friendly dog show, held in the dog show ring, and a great number of floral displays in the flower tent.

The committee expressed their delight at how the show had gone. This year was show secretary Rosie Ireland’s ‘first shot’ as it were at organising the show and many members of the committee commended her for the great job she had done.

Chairman, Mr Robert Cole, said on Rosie’s first year as a secretary: “The new secretary has been ever so efficient and has done a brilliant job.

“Everything appears to have gone off very smoothly, we have had brilliant support from the committee and it has been a real team effort to pull this off.”

He added: “The show has gone very well in my opinion. The attendance has been good and there is a large crowd.

“The entry of stock seen this year has been very good, there is some good stock on show.

“I have to say the flower tent is lovely, I have heard several comments saying it is just as good as the one at Royal Cornwall Show. Overall I think it is a great show this year.”

Whilst looking around the flower tent the Post caught up with this year’s president, Mrs John L Wonnacott.

The president had chosen to walk the show herself this year instead of using the traditional cart as she wanted to be able to spend time talking to people.

She said: “It has been a fabulous day. I am currently looking at these beautiful flowers, they are absolutely magnificent. People have come for miles to see these flowers. Overall I am very pleased with how the show has gone.”

This year’s Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Show, commonly referred to as the Holsworthy Show, went off without a hitch, much to the delight of the new secretary Rosie, she said: “It has been good despite the weather, there is a great amount of entries this year and it is looking like there will be an equally good attendance as well.

“We are up on all livestock entries which is great. The puissance in the main ring has been amazing and so far I have had a really good day.

“It has been nerve wracking at times trying to get everything together and we have been very busy here in the secretary tent but it has been good and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I have to say a big thank you to my brilliant committee who have helped me so much with this show. They are well practiced and many have been doing this for years which has really helped me in my first time out as secretary.”

The final word from Rosie was, ‘don’t worry, I have ordered some sunshine for the afternoon’ and surely enough, by the afternoon, the day brightened up long enough for some people to enjoy an ice cream.
