THE great-grandson of William Browning has rescued his gravestone from 'obliteration' during research into the family history.

William Browning, born in 1797, from Launceston had been a Methodist preacher for 70 years of his life. He was celebrated in the town and his painting in oils hangs in Lawrence House Museum today.

When he died in 1896, his family buried him in St Thomas Hill cemetery, that has since been bought and developed into new housing.
