This broken gravestone was discovered outside St Mary Magdalene Church, Launceston last week when workmen dug up the pavement. Colin Drowne of St Clether said they made the surprise discovery on Tuesday last week and had used some water to clean it up. Charles Walters of Lifton spotted the gravestone when he visited the town the following day and contacted the 'Post'. The gravestone read: "And of Robert Fry, husband of the said Sarah Fry, who departed this life in ??? aged 74 years." Due to where the stone was broken, it was not possible to read the date of when Mr Fry died. However, Mr Walters contacted the Cornwall Record Office to see if he could uncover any more information. They informed him that a Robert Fry was buried in Launceston on July 9, 1850 aged 74 years. The record also stated: "...Southgate, died at Stonehouse." Mr Walters said when he had more time he would continue his research and see whether he could discover anything about Sarah Fry. If anyone has any more information about the gravestone please contact the 'Post' on 01566 778213.
