THE newly formed Brandis Corner Wildlife Group was very pleased with the public response to its recent free bird nestbox building event, held October 26 at the Alpaca Park near Halwill Junction.

Funded through Torridge District Council under its Councillor Grants Scheme, facilitated by District Councillor Gaye Tabor, 52 local children and adults constructed nestboxes under Group supervision using presawn timber.

Various bird species were catered for, including Robins, Wrens, House Sparrows. Blue Tits and Great Tits.

The boxes were taken away with full instructions on siting, maintenance etc and the Group is looking for feedback next year, on the success of the newly erected boxes, 54 of which were built.

Group leader June Green said of the event "we were pleased to get the children along and it was good to see their enjoyment and enthusiasm. This project is a big step forward for our new group and helps us meet our objectives of protecting and benefiting existing wildlife and promoting public awareness of it in our area.'

Building on the success of this first project, the Group is now considering organising another similar event at some point in the future.
