TORRIDGE District Council has given the green light for 91 houses to be built on Holsworthy's current livestock market.

Plans for the houses, which include, two/three bedroom properties and some four-bed open market houses were approved subject to conditions, by the plans committee last week.

Developers Cavanna Homes submitted the application in October 2012. The scheme also includes an open space and river walk, a 'gateway' to Holsworthy.

Developers are keen to mark the old cattle market, possibly by using a wicker cow at the entrance, as well as appropriate road names.

Michael Newman, development manager for Cavanna Homes, said: "The site will only become available when the livestock market can relocate to the new premises that are being built on the edge of the town.

"It is likely that Cavanna will start the construction of the 91 new homes in early summer 2014; this coincides with the celebration of Cavanna Homes being in business for 91 years."
