CAMELFORD celebrated St Piran’s Day in true Cornish style on Thursday, March 5, with a special evening at the Masons Arms.

Kate Woods, landlady of the Masons Arms, was pleased to see such a positive turnout to the St Piran’s Day event, which is the first of its kind and is sure to continue for the foreseeable future.

The fun event kicked off at 7pm with the Camelford Pasty Championships which saw four delicious entries judged by Margaret Bosley who had the difficult decision of choosing just one winner, which fell to Mark Mears.

There was also a ‘name the bear’ competition and a raffle, as well as traditional Cornish splits with clotted cream donated by Rodda’s.

No St Piran’s celebration could be complete without some Cornish singing and the traditional rendition of ‘Trelawny’, which bellowed throughout the pub by approximately 50 people.

Kate said: “It went really well. We had the pasty competition — it was the first time we have ever done it so we didn’t have loads of entries, but it was still good to receive four entries, with the winner being Mark Mears.

“We also had a ‘name the bear’ competition, a raffle and singing. We were due to have a premise auction but due to the fun everyone was having we have decided to do the premise auction as a separate event on another evening.

“We had about 50 people singing which was really good, and overall we raised £132 for the Camelford branch of Cancer Research UK. We will definitely continue this event next year.”

Kate added: “Thanks to everyone who came along and supported the event, and to everyone who donated raffle prizes. Also thanks to Rodda’s for donating the clotted cream for the Cornish splits.”
