ORIGINALLY billed as a programme of piano duets, Bude Music Society’s summer concert at Minstrels, Canworthy Water became a solo piano recital.

One of the pianists (John Humphreys) was, unfortunately, indisposed and the other, Alan Schiller (the society’s president), valiantly stepped in at very short notice.

Following a long and distinguished career, which he began as a child prodigy, he had no difficulty in assembling a varied and interesting programme. Digital dexterity had given him a reputation as a Mozart specialist (Rondo in D major), but he also showed a wide tonal range and varied touch control in pieces by Beethoven (Waldstein Sonata), Schumann (2nd Arabesque), two movements from Hindemith Sonata No 2 and finally an exciting Spanish genre in two pieces by Albeniz. All showed an impressive technique, impeccable timing, balance and clear phrasing.

Drawing on his wide experience of concert work, study in Russia and working on cruise liners, there was a humorous repartee in question and answer sessions with the society’s chairman, Cora Stam, where he proved himself a good and often self-deprecating raconteur. The society is honoured to have him as its president and grateful for a pleasant, informal and relaxed afternoon of beautiful music.

Bude Music Society’s 72nd season begins on Sunday, September 23, when Paul Drayton will provide an overview of the artists and music that will be heard over the following six months. This event is at 3pm at Minstrels Music Centre and is open to all and free to attend.
