ON THE last day of term, staff of Whitstone Community Primary School bid a fond farewell to their school’s secretary.

Mrs Burt, Whitstone’s longest-serving member of staff, clocked up 27 years of dedicated service. She has decided it’s time to hang up her lanyard and retire, to spend more time in her garden — although she has promised to pop in to see members of staff and pupils from time to time.

As is widely acknowledged by those who know, the role of school secretary is a vital one in the smooth running of a school. Without an outstanding school administrator the institution would grind, screeching, to a halt.

Whitstone has been fortunate to have Mrs Burt, and her many sterling qualities, both personal and professional, occupying the crucial position, exemplifying the excellence of doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.

Over the years, as a result of Ms Burt’s proficiency, perceptiveness and perspicacity, many another’s burden has been lessened.

Current headteacher, Mr Woolner, said: “We all — pupils, parents, governors and staff — owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mrs Burt.

“She has worked tirelessly and with a wonderful sense of humour; her great efficiency has made my role — and those of my two immediate predecessors — so much easier.

“She will be very sorely missed by all. We all wish her the very best for a long and happy retirement.”

Mrs Burt was presented with gifts of Jo Downs’ glass objets d’art and vouchers from the governors and from her colleagues.
