CAROL Baker, who has played the organ at St Martin of Tours Church, Werrington for 60 years, was presented with flowers and gifts at morning service on Sunday (November 5).
She began lessons with the late Royland Jordan on St Mary Magdalene organ at the early age of 13 and took on full duties after one term at the age of 14.
This has been a long-term commitment and Carol has felt privileged to have been a part of many family weddings, funerals and other events in the church’s life.
For 25 years she has been the regular organist at St Thomas Church, Launceston. Last year Carol received the Cross of St Piran from the Bishop of Truro for services for the church.
Carol said the presentation of flowers and gifts was ‘totally unexpected’.
Other villages where she has played the organ include Boyton, North Tamerton and Virginstowe. At one time she would play at Werrington at 8am, Boyton at 9.15am and then go on to St Thomas.
She expressed her gratitude to her husband, David, and said she would not have been able to keep playing without his help. David would go to work earlier in the morning so that Carol could have the car to get to church, and she would take her two children along when they were young.
