The second Holsworthy Community Fun Day, held at the Community College and Leisure Centre last Wednesday (September 16), was a huge success. The fine weather encouraged a large attendance with the generations mixing and enjoying the wide variety of activities.
The event was organised by the Holsworthy Police Neighbourhood Beat Team as part of a multi agency
initiative and sponsored by the police, local councils, housing associations and other organisations and firms
Among the wide variety of fun activities were cheer leading, belly dancing, survival laser games, bush craft, face painting, gymnastic
displays, circus skills, meet the ponies, Sumo wrestling and a hula hoop workshop.
Equally important was the opportunity given to support agencies, clubs and societies to meet the public and raise awareness of what is
available locally.
Almost fifty exhibitors and organisations were present including Devon Youth Service, Arthritis Care, Age Concern, Red Cross, CAB, Devon Libraries, Connexions, Holsworthy Moorland Training Group, Holsworthy Army Cadets, St John Ambulance Wheels to Work, YISP & CASP and the Senior Council. The emergency services were there in force and had brought along a fire engine, ambulance and a police motorcycle.
Maria Gray of 'Time For Life' said not only was she able to meet potential clients but she also had the chance to network with other colleagues. The Portreeve, Russell Dymond, said it was good for so many organisations to meet the public in one place and for the community, both young and old, to come together in this way.
North Devon's Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kevin Harris, publicly expressed his thanks to everyone who had worked together to make Fun Day 2009 such a successful event. The star attraction was the Cornish hip hop dance group, FLAVA, who last year were
semi-finalists on 'Britain's Got Talent'.
For more than two hours they held workshops with 100 young people from Holsworthy schools, culminating in a performance before a large crowd of enthusiastic and appreciative
spectators. A fitting end to an event which has now firmly established itself in the Holsworthy calendar.
