IAN and Rachel O’Hare of the Barrel at Bude have commissioned local artist Hannah Wheeler to paint an interior wall of their micropub with a picture of their neighbour, well-known local fisherman Charlie Penwarden.

The painting, in oils and charcoal, will be a tribute to Bude’s fishing community both past and present. This picture wall, in the upstairs of the property, will sit alongside a permanent exhibition of photographs of Bude, each selected, and with a short narrative by local artist and historian Philip Jackson.

Ian and Rachel said: “We’re new to the area and feel privileged to own a business in one of the historic buildings of Bude, and believe we have a responsibility to enhance this wonderful building during our occupancy and give something back to this wonderful community. There are talented and creative people in Cornwall, and Bude has an abundance with great artists, artisans, musicians and crafts people — we want to support them when and where we can.”

Hannah started her work on September 18 and over the coming weeks will create a new piece of art for future generations to enjoy. An official ‘unveiling’ of the completed picture is planned for November 5 and will be celebrated with a tasting of a new range of ‘Barrel’ ales, extraordinary Cornish craft ales brewed in collaboration with a secret Cornish brewer.

As well as sourcing from small independent Cornish producers, Ian and Rachel host ‘Sunday Sessions’ of live music on Sunday afternoons with local musicians and have plans to host work from local artists, notwithstanding their external signage, which was painted by Steve Pinchess.

Their first exhibition will feature the photographs of Chris Small from Ocean and Earth’s photography.

People can view Hannah’s progress during opening hours — Thursday through to Sunday, each week.
