682 New Season Lambs, 105 Draft Ewes and Rams
A much larger entry and a faster trade for all weights and a lot more could have been sold as buyers orders were left unfilled.
Overall average of 343ppk, the well fleshed lambs in keen demand. Top being 356ppk from Arthur Vallance of Kilworthy, Tavistock , 41kgs £146. S Pocock of Pancrasweek realised 335ppk for 40.4kgs £143.50 and Graham Hookway of Huish Farm saw his 40kgs at 353ppk £141.
3 Vendors realised 350ppk SJ Murrin & Son of Monkokehampton had 4 pens of 44kgs £154, Messrs Pearce of Church Stiles, Monkokehampton had 2 pens of 44kgs £154 and Mr AW Short of Week St Mary 44.4kgs £155.50.
Several pens around £158 to a top of £158.50 from Mark Dymond of Higher Hollick, Yarnscombe for 2 pens of 46.4kgs.
Draft Ewes
A few more on offer and as last week a lot of plain ewes on offer all met a very fast trade. Suffolks topped the day at £170 from Tony Lang of Parkham.
Polled Dorset ewes to £168 from FG Knapman & Co of Luxton Barton. Texel x ewes to £165 from Sam Vickery of Killock Farm, Kilkhampton.
80 Hoggs
More on offer and a strong trade. Top being £148 from Karl Heard of Stratton.
360 Calves and Weaned Calves
Again, strong numbers down here in Holsworthy in the calf sections and another remarkable trade with those 2nd quality milk calves trading between £400 & £500 looking a serious price.
Calf trade is up 71.5% against the same week last year per head per calf with all the milk calves averaging £472/head. (with the weaned calves out of the average).
Weaned Calves
The biggest run of weaned calves seen in Holsworthy in some time, with 131 through the ring which all sold to a Rip-Roaring Trade.
Silworthy farm, Bradworthy saw the trade of the year with their 4 weaned British Blue steers to a mega £940 (Only 3 months old) with a pair of British Blue heifers looking just as dear to £920 at the same age.
Aberdeen Angus steers sold in big bunches from the same farm reached £700 and Pryor Dairying Limited back in with a large consignment and their Aberdeen Angus steers to £700 also.
Further 3-month-old British Blue steers to £790 for Pryor Dairying again, who sold Hereford steers to £675. Hereford heifers to £700 (3m) for Pryor Dairying who sold more to £605 and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £590 for Silworthy Farm.
Milk Calves
A fantastic run of Charolais bulls average a record £705 to a top of £860 for an eyecatching example in from BD & DG Andrew, Shebbear, who sold more to £860 and £770. Much younger Charolais bulls sold to £755 (1m) for B & D & A & V Timms, Thorndon Cross.
Further Charolais to £750 for SR Gilbert & Son, Ashwater, £728 for RG & LA & SR Wearing, £722 PH Collins Partnership and £628 for LJ Goaman, Hartland. Well grown Limousin bulls to £830 (2m) for Scott Richards, Highampton, £750 AS Brenton & Sons, with 15 Limousin bulls averaging £653.
Older Aberdeen Angus to £760 and £750 for GC & LA Jones, Crediton much younger month-old Aberdeen Angus bulls to £590 and £550 for LD Heywood Ltd, Hartland.
British Blue bulls sold to a flyer soaring away at £760 for Tony Dallyn, £740 Alan Tucker, £738 Nick and Kate Bowden, £695 for Michael Hopper, £690 for SR Gilbert & Son, £690 for ST & EE Nickels and £685 Ian Tapp travelling down from Tiverton.
Hereford bulls to £600 again for GC & LA Jones again, £580 for NJ & KC Bowden, Highampton, £545, £542 and £540 Harvey Bros, North Petherwin. An outstanding South Devon bull to £650 for PJ Martin, Buckland Filleigh.
Charolais heifers flying again to £725, £715 for BD & DG Andrew again, £660 for SR Gilbert & Son and £645 for PH Collins Partnership. British Blue heifers to £695 for LJ Goaman & Sons, Hartland, £680 for Scott Richards, £660 PJ Martin with all 38 British Blue heifers averaging £502.
Limsousin heifers to £700, £665, £648 for AS Brenton & Sons, St Keyne, £645 for PH Collins Partnership and £640 for Scott Richards. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £605 for GC & LA Jones, £530 for TJ & BE Cowley & Son, Ashwater and £510 for PH Collins Partnership.
Hereford heifers to £470 twice for AR & JM Gill, Liskeard and Harvey Bros and £400 for JLC Farms, Launceston. Simmental heifers to £560 for RWH Dilling, Highampton.
Dairy Sired Bulls
Friesian bulls to £235 for M & M Andrew & Sons, Black Torrington, £210, £165 (x2), for Wills Bro Limited, Wadebridge.
With processing calves selling between £88-£105 to go on and average £102.
130 Store Cattle
Numbers much tighter this week with several vendors making the most of the weather.
Trade still very strong considering the finished price with buyers bidding hard on all cattle on offer. 2 26mth British Blues from Messrs PJ & JA Martin of Buckland Filleigh topped out at £2160 who sold others at £1900 & £1800.
Other British Blues from Messrs R Bowden & Son of Bridgerule topped at £2000 (2) others at £1960 with plenty of younger 16-17mth British Blues to £1500-£1700. South Devon steers from Messrs PJ & JA Martin to £1840 & a 27mth Montbeliarde steer to £1750 from Messrs of JE & LJ Duke of Launceston.
Several good, fleshed heifers this week saw 3 cracking Charolais from Messrs HR Yelland & Son of Clawton to £1990 whose pair of Simmental heifers reached £1890.
Several stronger grass British Blue heifers topped at £1880 from Messrs SO Metherell of Hartland. Other British Blue heifers from PJ & JA Martin topped at £1870 (2) & Messrs HR Yelland & Son to £1860(2) South Devon heifers from Messrs PJ & JA Martin to £1800 (3).
Younger Store Cattle
Another useful entry but not enough to meet demand. 6 good 12mth Abeerdeen Angus heifers from Mr SH Ellis of St Just flew to £1350.
5 young 10mth British Blue steers from Messrs R Wood & Partners of Thornbury to £1260. A nice run of single suckled 9mth South Devons from Messrs Findlay & Palmer of Mortonhampstead saw steers to £990 & heifers to £960.
Grazing Cows
A nice run of 6-7 year Grazing Cows from Messrs TC & M Lane of Helston saw Herefords to £1390 & British Blues to £1260.
152 Dairy Cattle
The day’s dairy sale saw a flying trade from start to finish with cows in great demand both around the ring and on MartEye and cattle racing away to all areas of the South West, Herefordshire and Wales.
Topping the normal market at £3000 was a 1st calving heifer yielding 35Kgs on behalf of Gareth Hutchings of Launceston. Messrs Hugo of Bodmin continued their herd dispersal topping at £2950 for a fresh calved cow with others selling to £2450, £2400 and £2300 and their consignment averaging £2258.
Graham, Jill and Lloyd Duke of Werrington sold a 2nd calving Norwegian Red X Cow due in August at £2100. The main feature of today’s sale was the Herd Dispersal of the pedigree ‘Elmford’ herd on behalf of David and Sally Martin of Highampton, Beaworthy.
The cows were CIS recorded, homebred, fed on round bale silage and grazed grass. The herd consisted of 50% red and whites. The cows were in great demand and sold to a tremendous trade with 20% selling at £3000 or over. Top call of the day was 3500gns (£3675) for a freshly calved 3rd calver ‘Elmford Sonia 216 VG86’ yielding 40Kgs.
This was closely followed by ‘Elmford Juliette Red 113’ a heifer due to calve with her second in October who realised 3350gns (£3518) and ‘Elmford Dorothy 75 GP84’ another heifer due to calve with her second in October who sold at 3300gns (£3465).
Other fresh calved cows sold to 3250gns (£3413), £3200gns (£3360), 3100gns (£3255), 3050gns (£3203) and 3000gns (£3150). A 2nd calving cow due September ‘Emford Shirley Red 312 VG85’ also sold at 3000gns (£3150).
A 2nd calver due in November ‘Elmford Dorothy 72 VG85’ realised 2900gns (£3045) with a heifer due in December ‘Elmford Shirley 335’ also selling at 2900gns (£3045). All cows in the sale averaged a phenomenal £2526. A small number of in calf heifers due November-January sold a good trade topping at 1950gns (£2048) on two occasions with others selling to 1900gns (£1995).
Bulling heifers saw a top of £2100 for ‘Elmford Welcome 48’ who David and Sally have very kindly donated the proceeds to the cancer fund for the Yarty Ward at Exeter Hospital. Youngstock trade was on fire with other bulling/yearling heifers topping at 1850gns (£1943) X6, 1750gns (£1838) X3 and 1700gns (£1785) X5.
The sale also included 25 ‘A’ number heifer calves (0-12 mths old) which topped at 1350gns (£1418) for ‘Elmford Dorothy 81’ born July 2024 with an August 2024 born calf ‘Elmford Juliette 118’ selling at 1300gns (£1365).
Baby heifer calves topped at 450gns (£473) on two occasions for May 2025 born calves. The sale saw an overall average per head of all animals included within the sale of £1878. The cows were a true credit to David and Sally.
