584 Fat Hoggs, 104 Draft Ewes and Rams

A flying trade for all weights and more could have been sold.

Overall average of 352.4ppk. It was very noticeable that the hoggs housed overnight and the belly clipped hoggs met the strongest trade selling to a top 373ppk for 2 pens of 39kgs from Brad Tonkin of Ugworthy, Chilsworthy.

Mr RD Middleton of Ashreigney had a smart run topping at 369ppk for a pen of 44kgs to £162.50, 364ppk for 45kgs at £164 and 362ppk for 43.2kgs to £156.50, 2 other vendors at 362ppk.

Dave and Mandy Walter of Sessacott Park had 44.2kgs at £160 and Chris Allin of Prestacott 43kgs to £155.50. Top per head being £166 for heavies from Sam Turner of Penleaze.

Draft Ewes

Again a very fast trade, top being £167 for Continental x ewes. Suffolk x ewes to £165 from 3 vendors and Polled Dorset ewes at £158 from FG Knapman of North Tawton.

134 Store Hoggs

Again a flying trade, top being £138 from Max Allin of Jewells Farm, Launcells who realised £137 for another pen. J Davey & Sons of Heath Park Brattton Clovelly had a smart of run which topped at £136.

Couples

More on offer and very much sought after and a very strong trade but a lot more could have been sold. Doubles to £380 and singles to £330 all sold by Danny Norman of Dolton. Hylward Farm of Bideford had a good run of doubles with young lambs at foot, which topped at £360.

482 Calves

A large February entry of rearing and weaned calves forward sold to another fast paced trade with perhaps some of those medium type calves less money on the week and today saw the start of the big runs of Spring calves.

Weaned Calves

A quality entry of weaned calves sold to a fantastic trade and reached £880 (4m) for a pair of well-farmed Charolais Bulls in from Martin Burnell & Family, Chawleigh who went on to sell more to £830 and £800 (3-4m).

TWB Hookway & Partners, Roborough in next seeing their Limousin Steers to £880 (4m) and others to £810 and good but young Blues to £860 from them also. The same vendor went on to sell Blue Heifers to £850 and £790.

Milk Calves

Another busy day in this section with the best of the Charolais reaching £800 again this week in from Nick and Kate Bowden, Highampton.

Other good Charolais to £715 and £670 LJ Goaman & Sons, Hartland. Best of the Blue Bulls to £770 Nick and Kate Bowden, £740 TWB Hookway & Partners, £730 JAH Wood & Sons, Wadebridge, £710 I Marshall & Sons, Wadebridge, £702 LJ Goaman & Sons and £685 CRM Hancock, Liskeard.

Angus Bulls have been the trade of the day, when 18 sold over £700 and 60 in total averaged £528 a head to a top of £750 Ranches Ltd, Bridestowe and £745 I Marshall & Sons.

Next saw a smart Limousin Bull to £700 NC & RM Skinner, Halwill, more away to £680 BS & AM Martin, Marhamchurch, £650 Wrangworthy Dairy, £640 TBW Hookway & Partners, £620 AJ & P Nancekivell, Kilkhampton and £590 RAS Johns & Partners, Shebbear. 13 day old Simmental Bulls made £400 & £390 for T Wellington & Partners, St Kew.

Heifers seemed more in demand than Bulls today and reached £770 for an eye catching Charolais Heifer from FW Dymond & Sons, Shebbear. More at £760, £660, £630, £600 and £590 all sold by Nick and Kate Bowden.

Other good sorts to £608 and £600 for the Wearing Family, Tavistock. Strong Blue Heifers up to £760 TWB Hookway & Partners, others achieved £700 I Marshall & Sons.

£630 (x2), £625 and £620 (x3) all in from Bradley Farm Partnership, Hallworthy and £615 AJ & JJ Tucker & Sons, Stibb Cross.

Our Angus Heifers have got to be some of the highlights of today reaching £715 and £710 I Marshall & Sons, others £705 and £670 Ranches Ltd with 69 Angus Heifers averaging £460.

Strong Limousin Heifers to £600 NC & RM Skinner, £575 Graham Duke, Werrington, £570 TN & M Morrow & Partners, Truro, £540 Geoff Endacott, Halwill and £540 also for AJ & PE Nancekivell.

Fortnight old Simmental Heifers to £442 T Wellington & Partners, followed by Hereford Heifers to £540, £500 and £465 all in from FW Dymond & Sons.

Dairy Sired Bulls

39 Friesian Bulls forward which averaged £131 per head to a top of £295 for Robert Harris, Winkleigh, who sold a pair behind at £248 and £228. More to £230 BD & DG Andrew, Shebbear and £210 for a pair in from WA Raffe & Sons, Bradworthy.

150 Store Cattle

A huge uptick in the trade this week, most cattle up £100-£150 on the previous weeks and the cattle ring was completely packed with buyers and some of the fiercest bidding we have seen in weeks.

Plenty of older steers at £2000 and topping at £2330 for a 19mth Charolais from Messrs RJ & WT Prouse of Torrington. Two 23mth Fleckvieh steers from Messrs G & G Heal of Umberleigh raced away to £2200 who also sold three British Blues at £2070 & £1980.

Natives in demand but in short supply, an 18mth Devon from Messrs T&E Lang to £2080 who also sold Aberdeen Angus well at £1980 and Herefords to £1960. Several well fleshed heifers to £2240 for a 21mth single suckled heifer from Messrs RJ & WT Prouse.

Several good British Blue heifers to £2010 for four at 24mth from HJ Tucker of Frithelstock, other British Blues from Messrs R Gorst & Son of North Petherwin at £1900 & £1810 and 2 28mth British Blues from Messrs G&G Heal to £1800.

Native heifers to £1980 for a 19mth Aberdeen Angus from Messrs RJ & WT Prouse, other 18mth Aberdeen Angus heifers from Messrs T&E Lang to £1900. Younger summering steers & heifers at 15-16mths most to £1600-£1800.

Organic Cattle

A nice run of cattle from Messrs J&R Steer of Tavistock topped at £1860 for a 21mth steer others to £1700 and young 11mth old Aberdeen Angus to £830.

Younger Cattle

A short supply this week pushed the trade up again.

A nice run of 13mth single suckled Limousins from Messrs L&S Knight of Highampton hit £2030 others to £1620. A cracking run of well farmed 10mth Charolais carrying a lot of condition from Messrs SFB Agricultural Services of Bideford to £1640, others at £1530 and heifers to £1390 & £1380 again (10mths).

A cracking young 8mth Charolais from Mr Blake Sampson of Bradworthy to £1430 and young 5 & 6mth old cattle from Messrs J & J Irish of Newton St Petrock saw three British Blue steers to £1180 and 5mth Herefords to £890.

Cows and Calves

A young Friesian x British Blue with her 2mth Friesian heifer calf from RG Allin of Winkleigh at £2020.

Grazing Cows

Top was £1710 for a young Limousin cow from Messrs AJ & DE King of Winkleigh, another Friesian x cow from Mr S Bennett of Ashwater at £1620.

63 Dairy Cattle

Today’s sale saw a much-improved trade throughout with all qualities forward selling to good demand.

Topping the sale at £3050 was a 2nd calving cow yielding 54Kgs on behalf of Treveglos Farm Ltd, Bodmin. The same vendors had a superb run of fresh calvers with other cows selling to £3000, £2750, £2600 (x2), £2500 and their consignment averaging £2480.

Messrs RAS Johns and Partners of Shebbear sold a 3rd calving cow ‘Newrock Fortress Maria 17 GP84’ at £2550. Heifers also sold to a buoyant trade topping at £2850 on behalf of Treveglos Farm Ltd with RAS Johns & Partners realising £2600 (x2) for two smart heifers.

Messrs EV & BK Benney & Son of Helston topped at £2400 with other heifers selling to £2250 (x2).

Today’s sale also included a consignment of In Milk/In Calf Cows due April onwards from the continuation of the Herd Dispersal on behalf of DH Benney Ltd, Helston. The consignment saw great demand and topped at £2050 (x2).

Firstly, for a heifer yielding 19Kgs and due in June and secondly for a 4th calving cow due in August with others selling to £1950, £1850 and £1700 with cattle travelling as far afield as the North of England.

Mr MJ Sandercock of Launceston sold an In Calf Heifer due April to £1400 with Trenithon Farm of Helston topping at £520 for a group of Dairy Shorthorn X Yearling Heifers.
