528 New Season Lambs, 141 Draft Ewes and Rams

Similar entry and a lot faster trade for all the well fleshed and heavy lambs and as last week there were several pens of lean lambs on the day which diluted the average and were harder to place.

Top per kilo on the day was 357ppk for a pen of 47kgs £168 from JW Shepherd & Son of Trefrida, Jacobstow. S J Murrin & Sons of New Mills, Monkokehampton saw their 44kgs make 355ppk £156 and the Trewin family of Westacott, Abbotsham achieved 354ppk for their 46kgs £163.

18 pens over £165 to a top of £172 from Andy & James Melville from Trentworthy for their 50kgs and Neil Trewin and family of Bideford realised £171 for their 51kgs. Then first time seller Oscar Melville of Trentworthy saw his 50kgs Texel x to £170 he is going to be a better farmer than his dad and grandad one day.

Draft Ewes

Similar entry and a very fast trade. Top of the day was £189 for a pen of Suffolk x from Chris Ham of Cloister Hall, Frithelstock.

Texel x ewes to £185 from Dan Jeffery of Hartland and Charollais x ewes to £178 from Mark Dymond of Yarnscombe. Mules to £170. More ewes wanted next week please.

Store Lambs

Another good entry and a stronger trade. Top of the day was £129 from 2 vendors Peter Jones of Bratton Clovelly for shorn Suffolk x and Paul Tythacott of Day-o-peep, Instow for Charollais x lambs. Texel x lambs to £120 from the King family of Pynn Farm, Iddesleigh.

203 Breeding Ewes

A flying trade from start to finish with several prospective buyers in attendance. Suffolk x 2T to £255 from J&W Grigg of Treneglos who realised £250 for his 2nd pen.

Jim Mann of Petrockstow saw his 2 pens of Suffolk x 2T make £240, Suffolk x 6+ FM ewes from Paul Tythacott of Instow topped at £240 and £235 for his 2nd pen.

371 Calves and Weaned Calves

1871 Calves sold through Holsworthy in July, so plenty of calves around. Trade has lost its spark for those young smalls, but the strong continentals remain to sell very well.

Weaned Calves

Another sharp trade in this section, a trio of Charolais x steers (6m) reached £880 in from Martyn Heal and Family, Torrington who sold Blue steers well to £850 (6m). Other best Blue steers to £840 (6m) in from Rob Veal, Halwill who had a Hereford Heifer to £645 (6m).

Milk Calves

Strong numbers of young fresh rearing calves forward which sold to a varied trade with some strong sorts looking very well sold but some medium and smalls looking good value.

Best Blue bulls up to £810 for Mary George, Buckland Brewer, more good sorts made £730 MB Davey, Hartland, £720 A & D Heyward, Coryton, £705 RA Ayre, Barnstaple and £700 for both TJ & BE Cowley and G Duke, Werrington.

Strong reared Hereford bulls to £725 and £700 Mary George, younger sorts to £565 A & D Heyward with other £400 plus if they are good and strong.

A single strong Simmental to £770 for G Duke followed by best Limousin bulls to £700 for PH Collins, Holsworthy and £670 for a smashing type from £670 JT & RL Pomeroy, Bradworthy. Sweet well-bred Charolais bulls soared up to £710 in from Wrangworthy Dairy who had more to £700 and £695.

Angus bulls maxed out at £670 for DC & JM Pengilly, Bradworthy, others to £590 for Russell and Dan Risdon, Camelford and £540 for Rob Veale. A super Blonde bull achieved £675 for PH Collins, Holsworthy.

Heifers topped at £680 for a incredible Blue in from PH Collins, others to £600 WD Medland, Whitestone and £600 for Wills Bro LTD, Wadebridge.

Sweet Charolais attained £615 and £555 for Wrangworthy Dairy, Best Limousin heifers to £575 for PH Collins who had another at £550.

Hereford heifers topped out at £390 for Mary George, others £380 A & D Heyward. Angus heifers to £570 for a strong pair from G Duke and others to £440 DC & JM Pengilly.

Dairy Sired Bulls

A pair of well put together Friesian bulls made £195 in from SR Gilbert, Shebbear with 21 Friesian bulls averaging £100.

160 Store Cattle

Trade seemed slightly easier this week with buyers perhaps more selective than in previous weeks.

Top was £2560 for a thumping big 26mth Hereford steer from Mr R G Hoyle of Buckland Brewer who followed up with a 24mth British Blue at £2350.

A superb 21mth Dairy x British Blue organic steer from Messrs G Cole & Son of Pancrasweek at £2270 others from the same farm at £2090(2).

A lovely run of younger 17mth Charolais x Friesian from Messrs BD & DG Andrew from Shebbear who saw steers to £2080 other Charolais from HR Yelland & Son 16mth at £1860.

Aberdeen Angus were in short supply with a young 16mth Aberdeen Angus from Mr C McWhirter of High Bickington at £1900, other 17mth Friesian x Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs ARS Smallridge & Son of Parkham at £1880 (2). Best meat heifers to £2090 for a fleshed organic British Blue from Mr G Cole & Son of Pancrasweek.

3 well farmed non FA British Blue heifers from Mr NE Bright of Stratton at £1900 with other British Blues at £1840 & £1780, 2 single suckled Simmentals from Mr FR Bown of Okehampton at £1890 and a 17mth Charolais from Messrs BD & DG Andrew of Shebbear at £1700.

Best of the natives to £1850 for 2 17mth Dairy x Aberdeen Angus from Messrs ARS Smallridge & Son. Friesian heifers to £1700 for a 21mth Friesian from Messrs ART Shadrick & Son of Holsworthy who sold others to £1600.

Younger Stores

A good entry and a good trade throughout. A 14mth British Blue from Mr C McWhirter sold well at £1740 who sold Aberdeen Angus at £1570, 14mth British Blue steers from Messrs ART Shadrick & Son at £1450 (2) 13mth British Blue heifers from the same farm at £1360.

A lovely run of 7-9mth Limousins from Messrs JWR & CS Turner of Bishops Nympton saw steers to £1000 others £900 7mth, heifers to £980 8mth, others £850. Young 8mth British Blues fron Messrs Yeovale Farms LTD of Bideford saw £840 British Blue heifers at £950 & an 8mth Aberdeen Angus from the same farm at £880.

Aberdeen Angus heifers at £840.4 Devon x steers from Mr HD Andrews of Pyworthy sold well at £1460. Young Bulls required, top being £1150 for a 8mth Charolais from Messrs SR Gilbert & Son of Beaworthy.

182 Dairy Cattle

Today’s sale saw a flying trade from start to finish with a packed ring of buyers and a very active MartEye. Cows sold to all areas of the South West and Wales.

David & Sally Martin of Highampton continued their herd dispersal with two super fresh calved cows from their pedigree ‘Elmford’ herd, topping at £3700 and £3250. The same vendor also sold a red and white, July 2025 born Heifer calf following its dam at £420.

The main feature of today’s sale was the Herd Dispersal of 178 NMR Recorded, Holstein Friesian Dairy Cattle from the pedigree ‘Tempellow’ herd on behalf of Philip Ward of Liskeard.

The cows had been farmed on a simple, yet effective grass-based system, with the cows selected to produce high-quality milk with strong components and good yields topped at 3700gns (£3885) on two occasions.

Firstly for ‘Tempellow Sassafras Comet’ a freshly calved 2nd calver yielding 45Kgs and secondly for ‘Tempellow Quinet Japonica 38’ a 3rd calver yielding 31Kgs and due in October to BB.

This was closely followed by another October calver ‘Tempellow Hecuba 77’ and a freshly calved 2nd calver ‘Tempellow Duchy 12’ who both sold for 3600gns (£3780). Other fresh calvers sold to 3500gns (£3675), 3400gns (£3570) and 3300gns (£3465), 3100gns (£3255) and 3000gns (£3150).

Cows due in the autumn also sold to 3500gns (£3675) for ‘Tempellow Quintet Japonica 48’ due late November and ‘Tempellow Quintet Japonica 39’ a 3rd calver due December realised 3300gns (£3465).

The sale saw 25 cows selling to £3000 or over. Dry cows saw an immense trade topping at 3000gns (£3150) for ‘Tempellow Double Pink 78’ due September to BB.

Other dry cows raced away to 2700gns (£2835) on three occasions. In calf heifers saw a tremendous trade topping at 2750gns (£2888) for ‘Tempellow Villanova Tulip’ due October to AA. Other in calf heifers due in the autumn sold to 2700gns (£2835) (X3), 2500gns (£2625), 2400gns (£2520), 2300gns (£2415), 2200gns (£2310) and 2100gns (£2205).

Heifers due December-January still remain in great demand with ‘Tempellow Villanova Comet’ due at the end of December selling to 2000gns (£2100). Yearling heifers (12mths) saw spirited bidding topping at 1480gns (£1554) with others selling to 1450gns (£1523).

Baby heifer calves born June/July sold to a very level, consistent trade topping at 450gns (£473) on three occasions with others selling to 420gns (£441) and 400gns (£420).

The milking and dry portion of the herd averaged £2421 with a total sale average of all lives from baby calves through to senior cows showing an average of £2114. This was a true dispersal from a closed, well-managed herd and the cows were a real credit to Mr Philip Ward and his staff.
