400 New Season Lambs, 114 Draft Ewes and Rams
Smaller entry and as seen throughout the country the trade is easier.
The good meat lambs topped at 315ppk from two vendors, Fg Knapman of North Tawton 42.2kgs at £133 and WD Goaman of Hartland 47kgs at £148. Mark Sanders of Sheepwash realised 313ppk for 44kgs at £137.50. Top per head on the day was £155 from Graham Hookway of Huish.
Draft Ewes
Smaller entry with again a lot of plain ewes and a very strong trade was met.
Top on the day was £156 from two vendors, RJ Gubb of Langtree for Texel x and Sally & Chris Prouse of Clawton for Charollais x. Suffolk x ewes to £148 from Mike Watkin of Torrington. Grazing ewes at £75 to £106.
Store Lambs
Smaller entry and a trade. Top being £119 from Tom Mawtus of Tetcott.
Rams
Small entry saw the Charollais 2T top at £500 for two from Colin Smallcombe of Crediton.
184 Breeding Ewes
A very fast trade met by all breeds and a total clearance was achieved.
Texel x topped the day at £235 from John May of St Merryn and Suffolk x to £225 for 2 pens from I I Cowling from St Genny. Exmoor mules to £215 from WJ Crocker & Sons of Merton.
369 Calves and Weaned Calves
A smaller number and a much harder trade.
Weaned Calves
A small run of weaned calves topped out at £760 for s sweet single Blue steer in from Yeo Vale farms, Bideford other Blue steers to £720 for MW Brown, Torrington who sold Blue heifers well at £630.
Milk Calves
Rearing calf buyers showing plenty of resistance and being very picky of what they are buying. All those small and medium calves seeing a much harder trade but the best still seeing some strong returns.
A pair ofstronger Blue bulls reached £740 for O Petherick, Kilkhampton, other best Blue bulls hit £670 at a month old for Steven and Karen Kendall, Bodmin more to £660 for MJ Hopper, Whitestone, £650 for ST & EE Nickels, Newton Tracey and £570 for Steven Dark, Helston.
65 Blue Bulls average £390, so no disaster but back £72/head on the week. A eye catching Charolais bull sold well to £718 for the Wearing Family, Tavistock who had another at £690 looking a solid trade.
More Charolais Bulls to £640, £620 and £580 all presented by D Philp and Son, Looe. A wonderful Limousin bull made £655 for the Wearings again, more well sold at £638 for B & N Davey, Boyton and 18 day old ones at £430 for MT Braunton up from Helland.
A smart South Devon bull showed it self off well and achieved £625 for PJ Martin, Buckland Filliegh. Angus bulls a hard sell and reached £420 for R Risdon, more to £385 for MR & KL Cleave, Youlstone and £365 for Rob Veale, Halwill.
Well put together Hereford bulls at £490 and £450 for A J Bunkum, Saltash. Reared Blue heifers to £650 for a pair in from O Petherick, Kilkhampton, more to £530 for Yeo Vale Farm LTD, Bideford, £520 for The Kendall Family again, and £470 for D & T Wildern, Newton St Petrock.
A good run of Charolais heifers which attained £475 for D Philp, £425 for Martyn Heal, Torrington, £405 for RW Finnimore and £370 for WG S & JR Axford, Clawton. Best of the Limousin heifers drew £300 for JH Bolt, Downinney, Hereford heifers to £390 for A & D Heyward, Lifton who had another at £320.
Dairy Sired Bulls
28 Friesians bulls on offer which sold to a ‘middle of the road trade’ and reached £172 for a strong type in from DR & LJ Johns, Bodmin others to £140 for Steven and Karen Kendall again with all Friesian bulls average £74/head.
230 Store Cattle
Trade seemed firmer this week and quality up on previous weeks.
A good selection of stronger feeding cattle saw plenty of 18-22mth cattle at £1800+ topping a £2230 for a Hereford x steer from Mr O Wildren of Newton St Petrock.
A large framed charolais steer from Mr AS May of Week St Mary at £2180, 2 other 23mth charolais from Messrs LS Higgins & Son of Liskeard who sold well at £1920.
Best of the Blue steers topped at £2000 for a 21mth steer from Messrs G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton.
Other British blues from Mr P Tythecott of Instow to £1920 & four 20mth British blues from Messrs ACG Marshall of Chilsworthy at £1900(4).
A nice run of 23-24mth Limousin steers from Messrs AJM & PJ Ead of St Austell saw two at £1930 others at £1880 & 4 Aberdeen Angus from the same farm to £1870.
Top of the heifers was £1880 for 2 23mth British blues from Messrs G Daniel & Son who sold eight others at £1800 & 21mth British blue heifers from ACG Marshall to £1790(2).
A smart 24mth Charolais heifer topped at £1860 from Messrs LS Higgins & Son of Liskeard and Messrs AN & JA Guy of West Putford saw their Charolais to £1640.
Few native heifers this week topped at £1640 for two Herefords from Messrs LS Higgins & Son and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1630 for a well fleshed type from MR BJ Yelland from Holsworthy.
Younger Stores
Strong demand this week for a tighter entry. A further consignment from Messrs DI & ML Wootton of Ashreigney saw 11mth Limousins to £1450, British blues to £1170(4) & five smart 12mth Herefords at £1140.
Several young 6-10mth cattle saw strong bidding. A quality entry from Messrs ART Shadrick & Son of Holsworthy saw 9mth British blues to £1120 and others at £1070, 7mth Hereford steers to £980(3) & £840(5) & 5-7mth Hereford heifers at £800.
A good run of young 8-10mth Charolais heifers from Miss CA Crocker of Okehampton who topped at £930(4) others at £840(5). More young cattle required.
Grazing Cows
Top was £1290 for a 6 year old Friesian cow from Messrs LS Higgins & Son of Liskeard who sold two other Friesians at £990.
OTM Weighing Cows
An exceptionally well finished Hereford cow from Mr J Norman of Dolton weighed 854kilos 256ppk realising £2186. A very high demand for both weighing and grazing cows.
47 Dairy Cattle
A smaller than anticipated entry for today’s dairy market, saw a slightly easier trade than recent weeks. Topping the market at £3300 was a fresh calved heifer ‘Bartinney Doc Glory’ on behalf of Messrs RJ & JR Warren of Penzance with another fresh heifer ‘Bartinney Robin Sandra’ selling to £2700.
The Harris Family of Winkleigh sold a super consignment of fresh milk with heifers topping at £3200 for ‘Winkleigh’ Almamater Sharon’ and others selling to £2900. Messrs T & J Adams & Sons of Torrington sold a fresh heifer ‘Wardada Sumerian Denise’ at £2900 with Mr P Cleave, Bude also realising £2900 for his fresh heifer.
Cows topped at £3000 for ‘Winkleigh Robin Trixie GP84’ a 2nd calver yielding 37Kgs with Messrs T & J Adams realising £2800 for a 3rd calving cow ‘Wardada Donte Rosi’ yielding 53Kgs. Mr MF Bass of St Teath continued his dispersal with a consignment of Friesian type freshly calved cows and heifers which saw great demand both around the ring and on Marteye.
The consignment topped at £2750 for a 2nd calver with others selling to £2700, £2650, £2500 (X3) and the consignment averaging £2358. Ansdell Farms Ltd of Barnstaple sold a consignment of crossbred fresh calvers which saw a strong trade topping at £1950 with others selling to £1800 and £1700.
JS & AM Nicholls of Penzance sold a tremendous red and white in calf heifer due late September to £2400. Jack Wyatt of Woolacombe continued his dispersal with a run of October-November calving heifers which topped at £1650.
