IT WILL be the end of an era on December 31 when Fishley's Florists in Holsworthy closes its doors for the last time after trading for 110 years. Andrew Fishley, the current owner, is retiring and moving to Exeter.
It was in 1900 that his grandfather, Francis Fishley, opened the shop in Chapel Street. He passed on the business to his son Leslie who in turn was succeeded some 30 years ago by Andrew.
Andrew was 'brought up in the shop', working with his father and learning the trade as soon as he left school.Over the years he has seen changes in taste and style.
He said: "In the early days, flowers were painstakingly wired together but now they are more conveniently put in oasis foam. Formerly flowers were mostly for weddings and funerals, but nowadays they are used much more to mark special occasions, celebrations and as gifts."
Andrew will also be missed at Bodmin Street Methodist Church where he has been an organist since the age of 16.
Andrew's departure does not mean there will no longer be a florist's shop in Holsworthy. Andrea Furmage, who has worked with Andrew for 20 years, will take over the business and open a new shop in January further up Chapel Street in Bank House. It will be called 'Floral Design' and have its own website.
Andrea says it will be an exciting challenge for her and she will offer the same highly professional service including weddings and funerals.
