EXCITING and positive times ahead were predicted for Launceston by the new Mayor of the town, Cllr Rob Tremain, after he was elected unanimously last Thursday (May 19).
He stressed the need for everyone to work together for the town — with the council acting as the catalyst.
"We Launcestonians are proud of our town and its history. We learn from the past and look forward to the future," he said.
He referred to the Quality Council Status recently bestowed on the authority and the fact that the council has taken over the running of the Tourist Information Centre (as reported in our last issue).
"We have moved to new premises within the Market House Arcade and have new staff and volunteers joining the team.
"We are all working hard to promote this beautiful and historic town and are looking forward to exciting times ahead...
"Last year saw our first attempt at a Literary Festival to celebrate Charles Causley. Launceston Town Council is pleased to be a major sponsor of this year's festival — June 1 to June 5.
"Now that our Town Hall project has been completed, we are looking to other properties in our care.
"Lawrence House, the wonderful Georgian building in Castle Street that houses our award-winning museum, is next on the list. Complete re-painting is due to start.
"Car park maintenance work is also being undertaken this year along with the upgrading and refurbishment of our public toilets.
"We are on track to ensure that our assets are well looked after."
