ALL candidates in the local elections on June 4 for the new Cornwall Council — which has taken over from the six district councils — and Devon County Council are welcome to send in 150 words as a
potted biography, plus a photograph. This also applies to candidates in the European elections on the same day.
These will be used in the edition of May 28.
Polling takes place between 7am and 10pm.
Election notices from candidates — including policies, views on local issues and comment on the policies of other parties or candidates — will be published each week until election day. Candidates wishing to publish a paid for election notice, with or without a photograph, must only do so themselves or through their official agent.
It is an offence under election law to make a false statement as to the character or conduct of a candidate.
The editor's decision on the material to be
published in the 'Post' will be final.
Political make-up in Devon
The last Devon County Council elections took place on May 5, 2005, and since then there have been several by-elections. The current political
composition of the Council as at May, 2009 is: Liberal Democrat 32; Conservative 23; Labour 4; Independent 2, and one vacancy.
For the past four years the county council has been led by a Liberal Democrat administration. Prior to this, from 2001–2005 no party achieved a majority and the council agreed a power sharing arrangement with the first ever all-party administration in the County Council's 120-year history.
Cornwall Council has taken over from the former county council and the six former district councils, including North Cornwall and Caradon. The new council will be made up of 123 seats following the creation of new electoral divisions.
Election results will start coming through on Friday June 5.
See the list nominations for Cornwall and Devon on this page.
Currently in the European Parliament, seven MEPs represent the South-West, but this will fall to six representatives from June 4. Under proportional representation, there were three Conservative, two UKIP, one Liberal Democrat and one Labour. The total number of valid votes was 1,448,417 with a regional turn-out of 37.80 per cent (UK 38.52).
