DRIVERS in North Cornwall are set for a huge 40-mile diversion as part of upcoming roadworks.

From October 19, works are getting underway to allow for Cornwall Council to carry out flood prevention measures near Whitstone. Cormac, the council’s arms-length maintenance company, is set to carry out the excavation and removal of existing drainage assets and the installation a new carrier drain beneath the carriageway, with new associated drainage works including nine new gullies, five new manholes and a new larger drainage outfall, along the B3254.

However, following a week of works controlled by traffic lights, on October 26 a full closure of the stretch near Nethercott will come into force during all hours for up to five days, though works are expected to be completed by October 30.

As a result of the works, a massive diversion has been put in place, which could see motorists travel up to 41 miles, adding a more than an hour to journey times.

Those approaching Whitstone from the north will be turned back towards Red Post before turning left towards Stratton. Drivers will then be led along the A39 past Poundstock and eventually joining the B3262 though Hallworthy. From here, vehicles will join the A30 and travel through Launceston before finally rejoining the B3254.

Ahead of the closure, Cornwall Council has said: “Works will be carried out during daylight hours, initially using temporary traffic lights.

From October 26 to October 31, there will be a full road closure, between Cherricott Cottage and Sunnyside, for a distance of 100m, to allow the full extent of works to be carried out safely.

“A signed diversion route will be in place.

“Delays are likely, so please allow extra time for your journeys.

“Bus companies and the emergency services have been informed about the traffic management and will make alternative arrangements as needed.”
